The first day of your Sahara Desert tour from Agadir: Your driver-guide will come to pick you up from your hotel or riad in Agadir, wherever you are located, in advance. After ascending into the Anti-Atlas Mountains in the direction of Taroudant, a walled red city that is sometimes referred to as “Little Marrakech,” the route goes on to Taliouine, which is the city that serves as the epicenter of Morocco’s saffron growth region. Following a picturesque journey through the foothills of the Anti-Atlas, you will arrive at the Aït Benhaddou kasbah, a fortified ksar consisting of red mud-brick structures that has been featured in a multitude of major film productions. On the first night, you will stay in Ouarzazate, also known as Morocco’s “Hollywood,” which is a short drive from your current location.

Your departure from Ouarzazate will take place the next day; the path will take you via the Valley of Roses and the Dades Valley, which is renowned for the stunning folded rock formations that are often referred to as the “monkey fingers.” One of the most photographed locations along the journey is a halt at the Todra Gorge, which is a limestone canyon that had been carved out by the Todra River and is around 300 meters high. After traveling via Tinghir and Erfoud in the direction of the east, you will arrive at Merzouga by the late afternoon. This location is where four-wheel-drive vehicles give way to camels: a trek that lasts approximately forty-five to ninety minutes will take you into the Erg Chebbi dunes, where a traditional nomad camp is waiting for the sun to set, where you will enjoy a home-cooked Berber dinner, and where you will listen to live music around the fire before retiring to sleep under one of the clearest night skies in Morocco.

Following an early wake-up call to witness the dunes become gold as the sun rises, breakfast will be served at the camp before the camel or four-wheel-drive vehicle is used to return to Merzouga. The trip back to Agadir follows the same path as the one that went south over the Anti-Atlas, passing through N’Kob, Agdez, and Taliouine.
