Season: When the Sky Is at Its Best

Summer (June–August): Galactic Core Season

The Milky Way is best positioned for viewing in Morocco during the summer months. The galactic core, the bright, dense part of the Milky Way around the constellation Sagittarius, rises high above the southern horizon between June and August, and is ideally placed for viewing between 10pm and 2am. This is the Milky Way as seen in the most iconic astrophotography images of the Sahara Desert: a sweeping, complex arc of dense star clouds overhead, with the dust lanes and star forming regions of the galactic bulge visible to the naked eye. The downside of summer stargazing is the heat – daytime temperatures in Erg Chebbi reach 40-44°C, although nights cool quickly after dark to 20-24°C, so the actual stargazing hours are comfortable.

Autumn (September–November): Best All-Round Season

October is our guides’ favourite month for Morocco stargazing tours. In the early evening before setting, the galactic core can still be seen partially in the western sky. The summer heat has gone, the desert night temperatures are comfortable (10–16 °C at midnight) and the autumn sky is bringing the great winter constellations – Orion, Taurus with the Pleiades cluster, Perseus – rising in the east as the night goes on. October is also the time of the peak Orionid meteor shower (around October 21st each year) which produces 15-25 meteors per hour at maximum from a Class 2 dark sky location.

Winter (December–February): Clearest Skies of the Year

The winter months at Erg Chebbi stargazing produce the most atmospheric transparency of the year. Humidity is very low and there is no summer dust haze, allowing faint objects to be seen with unusual clarity. Orion rules the winter sky at a splendid altitude, the Pleiades cluster (the Seven Sisters) is at its greatest altitude and detail and experienced astronomers coming to our camp in January and February invariably report the highest object magnitudes of any season. The big downside? By 3am winter desert nights drop to 0-4C, so serious warm clothing is needed for extended outdoor observing. “That’s why we’ve got an electric blanket in our luxury glamping tent.

Spring (March–May): Most Popular for Stargazing Travelers

Spring is the most popular season for Sahara desert stars Morocco among our guests, as it offers the most comfortable combination of good dark skies, moderate night temperatures (7-14°C at the peak observation hours), and the visual beauty of the spring dune landscape. In April the core of the Milky Way rises in the southeast around 3-4am, giving early risers the chance to see the galactic core in the pre-dawn sky before sunrise. Spring is also the time for the year’s biggest meteor shower, the Eta Aquariids (peak around May 5-6 each year), which produces 50-60 meteors per hour at its peak from the southern sky position of Erg Chebbi.

It is in the constellation Andromeda and is best seen from September through November as it passes high overhead. For many of our guests it’s a special knowledge that the light that they are looking at with their naked eye left its source before modern humans were on earth.

Meteor Showers

Several of the year’s major meteor showers produce spectacular displays from Erg Chebbi. The Perseids (peak August 12–13) produce 80–100 meteors per hour at maximum from a dark site — the most impressive single-night meteor display of the year. The Geminids (peak December 13–14) produce 120+ meteors per hour, making them technically the most prolific shower of the year, though the winter cold requires determination. The Leonids (peak November 17–18) and Orionids (peak October 21) both provide reliable 20–40 meteors per hour from Erg Chebbi.

Can I photograph the Milky Way in Morocco with my phone?
Yes, modern smartphones can take photos of the Milky Way at Erg Chebbi, especially in Night Mode or Pro Photo Mode with a long exposure setting. With the right settings (maximum Night Mode duration, usually 30 seconds, a phone tripod for stability, and aiming towards the darkest part of the sky rather than directly at the galactic core, which can overexpose on phone sensors), the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 series, Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, and Google Pixel 8 Pro all capture recognizable Milky Way photos from a Class 2 dark sky site. For the best results, a dedicated mirrorless camera with a fast wide-angle lens (f/2.8 or wider) at ISO 3200–6400 produces images no current smartphone can match but smartphone results are still dramatically better than most travelers expect.

Do I need to stay overnight to stargaze in Morocco?
Yes, the only way to enjoy the best of stargazing in Morocco is to spend the night at the Erg Chebbi desert camp. Peak sky darkness is between 11pm and 4am with the camp 7km from the nearest road light and the full depth of the Class 2 sky available. Camel rides or day trips that return to Merzouga village before midnight miss the best stargazing window altogether. The overnight camel trek to our desert camp – departing at 5pm, reaching camp for dinner and the evening sky experience, and returning after sunrise the following morning – is designed to maximise both the desert experience and the stargazing window in one extraordinary night.

Is there a telescope at the Erg Chebbi desert camp?
Now, 8×42 binoculars are available for guest use at our desert camp over Morocco Tours, great for Pleiades, Jupiter’s moons, the Andromeda Galaxy, and globular clusters. We don’t have a telescope at the camp at the moment. The sky quality at Erg Chebbi stargazing is amazing for naked-eye and binocular stargazing without any optical aid. Travelers wishing to bring their own scope are welcome to do so – the camel saddles will accommodate a small to medium size refractor or table top dob in a padded bag. Merzouga is situated about 31°N latitude, which means that stargazing in the Sahara Desert Morocco at Erg Chebbi provides access to the whole northern hemisphere sky and a good deal of the southern sky. All the constellations of the northern hemisphere are visible year round including Ursa Major (Big Dipper), Cassiopeia, Perseus, Andromeda, and Cygnus. In winter and spring Orion transits almost overhead, and the Pleiades are at their maximum altitude. In summer and early autumn, Scorpius is high in the south – a constellation that never rises above the horizon from northern European vantage points. The Large Magellanic Cloud is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, only visible from southern latitudes below about 20°N, on clear nights only. It is visible low above the southern horizon on the clearest nights from October through March.
